Installing a USA eSIM on an iPhone takes just a few minutes. You don’t need a store visit or a SIM ejector tool. Here’s exactly how the process works, from checking compatibility to confirming your new line is active.
Before You Start: Confirm Compatibility
Not every iPhone model supports eSIM. Support can also vary by region, depending on where you bought the device. Before you begin, check your model against a verified device compatibility list. That way, you won’t waste time troubleshooting a phone that never supported eSIM in the first place.
You can also check directly on your device. Open the Phone app and dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, your iPhone has eSIM hardware.
Step 1: Make Sure Your iPhone Is Unlocked
A carrier-locked iPhone may block new eSIM profiles, even if the hardware supports eSIM. Contact your original carrier first and confirm your device is unlocked before you purchase a plan.
Step 2: Purchase Your USA eSIM Plan
Pick a USA eSIM plan that matches how you’ll actually use your phone during your trip. Choose talk and SMS only, or a plan that includes data too. After you purchase, we deliver your eSIM digitally — usually as a QR code sent to your account or email within a short window of time.
Step 3: Open Settings on Your iPhone
Go to Settings → Cellular. On some iPhone models, this appears as Mobile Data instead.
Step 4: Add Your eSIM
Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan. Your iPhone will then ask you to scan a QR code, enter details manually, or use carrier app activation if it’s available.
Step 5: Scan the QR Code
Point your camera at the QR code you received after purchase. Your iPhone detects it automatically and starts downloading your eSIM profile. This step usually takes less than a minute on a stable WiFi connection.
Step 6: Label Your New Line
Your iPhone will ask you to label your lines. For example, use “Personal” for your home number and “USA eSIM” for your new one. Clear labels make it easier to pick the right line for calls, texts, or data later.
Step 7: Choose Your Default Lines
You’ll need to set:
- A default line for outgoing calls and texts
- A default line for cellular data
- Whether iMessage and FaceTime stay linked to your original number
Most travelers keep their home number as the default for calls and texts. They switch cellular data over to the new USA eSIM line instead.
Step 8: Confirm Your Connection
Once setup finishes, check the signal bars at the top of your screen for your new line. You can also open Settings → Cellular again to confirm the eSIM shows as active.
Common Issues During Setup
- QR code won’t scan: Use the Camera app or the built-in scanner in the Add eSIM flow. Don’t try to scan a screenshot from a photo app.
- “Unable to Activate” message: This usually means someone already used the eSIM on another device, or your iPhone is still carrier-locked. Contact support with your order details if the message persists.
- No signal after activation: Toggle Airplane Mode on and off, or restart your iPhone to refresh the cellular connection.
After Activation
Your plan’s validity period usually starts at activation, not at purchase. That means you can install your eSIM ahead of travel and activate it closer to your trip, depending on your plan. Check your specific plan’s terms to confirm when validity starts.
