Setting up a USA eSIM on a Google Pixel phone takes just a few minutes. You don’t need a physical SIM card or a carrier store visit. Here’s exactly how to do it, step by step.
Before You Start: Confirm Compatibility
Not every Pixel model supports eSIM. Support also varies by region and by which carrier originally sold your phone. Before you begin, check your exact model against a verified device compatibility list.
You can also check directly on your device. Go to Settings → About Phone → SIM Status. Look for an “EID” number. If you see one, your Pixel has eSIM hardware.
Step 1: Confirm Your Pixel Is Unlocked
A carrier-locked Pixel phone may block new eSIM profiles. This can happen even when the hardware fully supports eSIM. Contact your original carrier first and confirm your phone is unlocked before you buy a plan.
Step 2: Purchase Your USA eSIM Plan
Pick a USA eSIM plan that fits your trip. Choose talk and SMS only, or a plan with data included too. After you purchase, we deliver your eSIM digitally as a QR code, usually within a short window of time.
Step 3: Open Settings on Your Pixel
Go to Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs.
Step 4: Add Your eSIM
Tap Add SIM or the plus icon next to your existing SIMs. Your phone will then ask you to scan a QR code or enter the activation details manually.
Step 5: Scan the QR Code
Point your camera at the QR code you received after purchase. Your Pixel detects it automatically and starts downloading the eSIM profile. This usually takes under a minute on stable WiFi.
Step 6: Label Your New Line
Your phone will ask you to name your lines. Use something like “Personal” for your home number and “USA eSIM” for your new one. Clear labels make it easier to switch between lines later.
Step 7: Set Your Preferred Lines
Open SIMs settings again and choose:
- Which line handles calls
- Which line handles text messages
- Which line handles mobile data
Most travelers keep their home number as the default for calls and texts. They switch mobile data over to the new USA eSIM line instead.
Step 8: Confirm Your Connection
Check the status bar at the top of your screen for signal on your new line. You can also return to SIMs settings to confirm the eSIM shows as active.
Common Issues During Setup
- QR code won’t scan: Use the Camera or the scanner built into the Add SIM flow. Don’t try to scan a screenshot from your gallery.
- “Unable to Activate” message: This usually means someone already used the eSIM on another device, or your Pixel is still carrier-locked. Contact support with your order details if the issue continues.
- No signal after activation: Toggle Airplane Mode on and off, or restart your phone to refresh the connection.
After Activation
Your plan’s validity period usually starts at activation, not at purchase. That means you can set up your eSIM before you travel and activate it closer to your trip. Check your specific plan’s terms to confirm when validity starts.
